Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)

  • Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is a system of organized group activities to improve equipment effectiveness.
  • Users and operators are responsible for the routine inspection, maintenance, and upkeep of their machines, as well as minor repairs.
  • TPM is the best way to enhance performance of longterm availability of machine.
  • Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) used to fight losses such as:
    - Breakdowns
    - Slow running or small stops
    - Defects
    - Accidents
    - Reduced yield

TPM Steps

  • 1. Select a Machine for TPM.
    2. Identify Team
    3. Identify list of challenges.
    4. Tie a tag for each problem.
    5. Assign responsibility for each team
    6. Monitor OEE
    7. Set target for OEE
    8. Meet once/weekly to review the action

Pillars of TPM

TPM's eight pillars are primarily concerned with proactive and preventative techniques for increasing equipment effectiveness.
  • Autonomous Maintenance
Operators are responsible for routine maintenance such as cleaning, lubricating, and inspection
  • Planned Maintenance Schedules maintenance activities based on predicted and/or measured failure rates.
  • Quality Maintenance/ Integration Integrate error detection and prevention into the manufacturing processes. Use Root Cause Analysis to remove repeated sources of quality defects.
  • Focused Improvement Encourage groups of employees to proactively work to enhance equipment operation on a regular or incrementalbasis.
  • Early Equipment Management Acquired practical experience and understanding of manufacturing equipment are used to improve the design of new machinery.
  • Training and Education It involves training of operators, maintenance workers, and managers to learn TPM techniques to meet TPM objectives.
  • Safety, health and Environment Good maintenance management prevents injuries during the maintenance and leads to the well-being and safety of all employees.
  • TPM in Administration Instead of leaving it to the "worker bees," administrative staff and managers should also join TPM activities

Expert's Comment

  • TPM one of the key tools of Lean Management. A powerful and it can change the whole efficiency of the entire manufacturing line itself as many times TPM machines will also be pacemaker process in many manufacturing lines.
  • If you just give a thought OEE is so very well-thought-out metric. The metric OEE is an indication of what to expect from the machine. If OEE is 90% means if the full load capacity is 1000 the machine is capable of producing 900 good part.
